COLLEGE BASKETBALL: NCAA season set to open day before Thanksgiving

The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball season will begin Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving. The Division I Council voted Wednesday to push the start date back from the originally scheduled Nov. 10 as one of several precautions against the spread of coronavirus.

After dropping the first set Monday night, Columbia rallied to defeat Fort White 3-1 (17-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-13) at home for its first win of the season. Brandi Oliver led the Lady Tigers (1-3) with 16 kills, five aces, 18 digs and three blocks, while Zimora Owens added 11 kills.

You simply don’t replace the program’s all-time leader passer. Jordan Smith was one of the best to ever sling it at Columbia, and he could slice and dice defenses with his legs too.

Florida’s athletic department is seeing a rise in covid-19 cases. The school reported 61 new positive cases Tuesday, including six for the football team a little more than a week before its season opener at Ole Miss.
