COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Smith adds Maxwell Award to collection of postseason honors

Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith of Alabama added to his collection of postseason honors Thursday night, receiving the Maxwell Award as the college football player of the year. Smith also won the Walter Camp player of the year and the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver.

Aaron Morse was known as a basketball player during his first three years at Columbia. Turns out, he’s a pretty good cross country runner too. He just didn’t know it until his senior year.

Audrey Fender burst on the scene as a freshman for Columbia, proving she was the team’s top runner in just a short amount of time. She only improved upon her first campaign with another stellar season as a sophomore.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence declaring for NFL draft, setting stage to be selected by Jags

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has made it official — he’s heading to the NFL. Lawrence, the 6-foot-6 QB with the power arm and flowing hair, released a video on social media Wednesday announcing he was leaving school and declaring for the NFL draft.

LIVE OAK — Will Carpenter’s success in the pool comes by the book. Literally. On top of his dedication and hard work, Carpenter said the turning point in his swimming career at Suwannee came last year when he read a book on swimming. The speed soon followed. “That did help,” he said.

PREP ROUNDUP: CHS tops Eastside on Senior Night, plus results from boys & girls basketball

Bryant Rigdon scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to lift Columbia past Eastside 2-1 on Senior Night on Tuesday. Trey Hingson also scored a goal on a free kick for the Tigers (8-1-1) in the 56th minute after a scoreless first half before the Rams (1-3-2) tied it in the 73rd minute.

NEW YORK — On an Alabama team stacked with stars, DeVonta Smith emerged as the best player in college football while playing a position that rarely gets that kind of recognition.
