BOYS BASKETBALL: Columbia routs Suwannee for third straight victory

The press energizes Columbia. Head coach Steve Faulkner went to it in the third quarter against Suwannee and it fueled his team’s best win of the season. Charleston Ponds scored 16 points and Marcus Peterson added 14 more to lead the Tigers to a 65-37 win over the Bulldogs at home Friday night.

BOYS SOCCER: Columbia edges Santa Fe to win inaugural Three Rivers Cup

The cup belongs to Columbia. The Columbia captured the inaugural Three Rivers Cup by dispatching the Santa Fe Raiders 2-1 Friday night at Tigers Stadium. The Tigers (9-1-1) won their sixth consecutive game and haven’t lost in their last seven contests.

BRANFORD —  She’s been a standout on the diamond and the court the past five years at Branford. A natural athlete, Cera McElreath has been a key contributor for the Buccaneers’ basketball, softball and volleyball teams since she was an eighth grader.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Smith adds Maxwell Award to collection of postseason honors

Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith of Alabama added to his collection of postseason honors Thursday night, receiving the Maxwell Award as the college football player of the year. Smith also won the Walter Camp player of the year and the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver.

Audrey Fender burst on the scene as a freshman for Columbia, proving she was the team’s top runner in just a short amount of time. She only improved upon her first campaign with another stellar season as a sophomore.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence declaring for NFL draft, setting stage to be selected by Jags

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has made it official — he’s heading to the NFL. Lawrence, the 6-foot-6 QB with the power arm and flowing hair, released a video on social media Wednesday announcing he was leaving school and declaring for the NFL draft.
