HILLIARD — The Hornets last lost a game in the first week of October. That 23-21 defeat at Fort White seems like a lifetime ago to them now. Lafayette trounced Hilliard 31-13 in its Region 3-1R semifinal in a game that wasn’t all that close.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Columbia blows lead, then rallies to beat Newberry in home opener

Columbia looked like the young team that it is in just its third game of the season. The Tigers took an early lead, then relinquished it with costly turnovers, then found a way to rally back. They can thank their defense and some big-time plays from sophomore forward Jolena Gardner for that.

XFL: Columbia alum Roger Cray taken by Seattle in draft

Former Columbia High star Roger Cray was selected by the Seattle Sea Dragons in the 21st round of the XFL draft on Wednesday. The defensive back finished his collegiate career last fall at Old Dominion after playing four seasons at Western Kentucky.

PREP GOLF: Columbia girls place 6th at state, Donaldson finishes 11th for SHS

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS — A rough back nine wasn’t going to ruin Columbia’s day. The Tigers still made history. The CHS girls golf team did just enough to hold onto sixth place at the Class 2A state tournament on Wednesday, posting a two-round score of 676.
