MADISON — If there was any good news tucked away at Boot Hill for Fort White, Jamie Hampton probably ran past it. The Madison County quarterback only needed a half of play to put his stamp on the first round of the Class 1R playoffs while simultaneously dashing the hopes of the Fort White faithful.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Doug Pederson will always feel indebted to Chiefs coach Andy Reid for the way his career played out. Both the playing one and the coaching one. It was Reid who gave Pederson, then a backup quarterback for the Packers, an opportunity to be an NFL starter with the Eagles.

PREP FOOTBALL: Columbia, Lincoln set for new chapter in long playoff rivalry

A playoff rivalry is renewed, one that has a flair for the dramatics. Columbia and Lincoln have had postseason battles going back years, most recently facing off in three straight seasons from 2015 to 2017 with a couple of those games going down to the wire.

PREP FOOTBALL: Fort White ‘all-in’ for playoff matchup against Madison County

FORT WHITE — The Indians have been in this position before. But now, the timing seems ripe to get over a familiar hurdle. When Fort White travels to Boot Hill to take on Madison County in Friday’s Region 3-1A quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m., it will carry a legacy of losses to the Cowboys.

PREP FOOTBALL: Branford, Lafayette face off for second time in playoff opener

MAYO — The opposing coaches both agree the playoff game between rivals Lafayette and Branford will likely not result in another Lafayette blowout. Three weeks ago, the Hornets (8-2) won their 13th in a row in the series between the neighboring counties in a 47-0 rout at Mayo.

PREP BASEBALL: Fernald signs with UCF, Palmer headed to St. John's River

Columbia pitcher/infielder Josh Fernald and outfielder/pitcher Carston Palmer both inked their letters of intent to play in college on Wednesday. Fernald signed with UCF while Palmer signed with junior college St. Johns River.
