BOYS BASKETBALL — Columbia 58, Fleming Island 44: The Tigers (7-2) topped the Golden Eagles (8-2) in the semifinals of the Battle on the Island on Wednesday thanks to 16 points apiece from forwards Ty’jahn Wright and Seth Stockton, with Wright hitting three 3-pointers.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Former Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz to play for Florida in 2023

GAINESVILLE — Former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz is transferring to Florida, giving the Gators an experienced starter at a depleted position. Mertz announced his commitment on social media Wednesday. He is expected to enroll at the Southeastern Conference school in January.

Early National Signing Day is Wednesday and two Columbia football players are set to sign their letters of intent. Linebacker Jaden Robinson and safety Amare Ferrell will sign at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium. Robinson is verbally committed to Florida, while Ferrell is committed to Indiana.

Colt Patterson put up one of the best fights ever for a Fort White goalkeeper against Columbia. The junior made eight straight saves, keeping a relatively one-sided match scoreless into the 56th minute. Then he made save number nine, only this time he didn’t possess the ball.
