PREP FOOTBALL: Peterson named starting QB vs. Englewood after leading comeback against North Miami Beach

Three completions for three touchdowns was all Columbia coach Brian Allen needed to see. After Marcus Peterson led the Tigers to a 35-34 come-from-behind victory over North Miami Beach on Friday, Allen named the junior the starting quarterback for this week’s play-in playoff game against Englewood.

BILLIARDS: 2 Lake City teams to compete in World Pool Championships

The Kegroom Green Rollers and Poke N Hope of Lake City qualified for the 2020 APA World Pool Championships, conducted by the American Poolplayers Association (APA), through their top performance in the Suwannee River APA World Qualifier at Chiefland Billiards in September.

COMMENTARY: Allen's gutsy move to put Peterson at QB pays off for first win

It didn’t look good for Columbia when the fourth quarter began Friday night. North Miami Beach held a 28-16 lead heading into the final quarter and the Tigers’ offense had stalled in sophomore Bronsen Tillotson’s first career start.

PREP SWIMMING: Suwannee qualifies six for regional meet

Suwannee’s boys swim team placed fifth at the District 2-2A Meet at the Northeast Pool in Gainesville on Friday, while the girls placed seventh. The Bulldogs qualified several swimmers for the Region 1-2A Meet on Nov. 5:  — Will Carpenter placed fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.

NFL: Minshew ruled out vs. Texans, Luton to start at QB for Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Jaguars are moving from one sixth-round draft pick to another at quarterback. Coach Doug Marrone said Monday that Gardner Minshew will miss Sunday's game against Houston (1-6) with a thumb injury on his throwing hand. Rookie Jake Luton will make his NFL debut.

GAINESVILLE — Florida coach Dan Mullen did more to inflame than extinguish a tense situation against Missouri, drawing a public reprimand and a hefty fine. The Southeastern Conference docked Mullen $25,000 on Monday for his role in a benches-clearing brawl against the Tigers on Saturday night.

Columbia’s boys cross country team finished runner-up at the District 2-3A Meet on Saturday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee to qualify for regionals, just behind champion Leon. Aaron Morse led the Tigers with a fourth-place finish, posting a personal-best time of 17:34.47.

GAINESVILLE — Florida coach Dan Mullen dressed as Darth Vader was fitting considering his last three weeks. Mullen showed up following a a41-17 victory over Missouri wearing a a full "Star Wars" villain costume, complete with a red lightsaber.
