GIRLS BASKETBALL: Hawthorne stings Columbia

Mya McGraw scored 20 points to lead Hawthorne to 66-40 win over Columbia at home Wednesday night. Leianna Buie also had 14 points and Jayla Williams tallied 10 points for the undefeated Lady Hornets (3-0).

BOYS BASKETBALL: Columbia adds depth with six football players as Ponds starts the season hot

Columbia is adding a ton of depth to the roster this week. Head coach Steve Faulkner held a tryout for the football players on Monday following the end of that season Friday and a few key guys are set to return for the Tigers, along with some new faces.

BOYS SOCCER: Columbia continues hot start, holds off Santa Fe for third straight win

ALACHUA — Through seven matches this season, Columbia is proving tough to beat. Santa Fe found that out Tuesday night. Christian Fernandes scored two goals and Noel Caballero added another to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 win on the Raiders’ Senior Night.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Tide, Irish, Tigers, Buckeyes hold steady atop CFP rankings

For the third straight week, Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State held on to the top four spots in the College Football Playoff rankings. The selection committee’s second-from-last rankings had only a little movement in the top 10. Texas A&M is still fifth and Florida held at sixth.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Stalled ground game? Pass-happy Florida simply happy passing

GAINESVILLE — Florida coach Dan Mullen doesn’t even really bother trying to run the ball anymore. Sure, the sixth-ranked Gators hand it off here and there, mostly when they’re leading and/or trying to run out the clock. But they’re as one-dimensional as any Florida team in nearly two decades.

GIRLS SOCCER: Columbia rallies to top Keystone Heights

Columbia rallied from a one-goal deficit at halftime to defeat Keystone Heights 2-1 on the road Monday night. Jaden Rolle and Skyler Ziegaus both scored a goal for the Lady Tigers (4-3-3), with Ziegaus recording an assist on Rolle’s goal.

COMMENTARY: Future is bright for Columbia with several set to return in 2021

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year at Columbia. Twenty seniors graduated in the spring, leaving holes at several positions. Then came covid-19, shutting down spring ball and summer workouts with it.  It was the worst case scenario for the Tigers.
