Thousands flock to Mayo’s Pioneer Day

MAYO — If you throw it, they will come. The 42nd annual Pioneer Day, organized by the Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, drew a big turnout to Veteran’s Memorial Park on Saturday.

Lafayette BOCC: No permanent solution to rough dirt roads

MAYO — There’s no question that SE Arabian Road, a dirt road that connects State Road 349 and U.S. Highway 27, is in bad shape. But there is no easy solution to fixing the problems with the road, Lafayette County officials told residents at Monday’s County Commission meeting.

LIVE OAK — After two wet months, North Florida started to dry out in September. The Suwannee River Water Management District’s hydrologic conditions report for the month, released Tuesday, showed that rainfall in the area was down 3% compared to the historical average from 1932-2021.

MADISON — North Florida College has hired Anna Kelley, a doctor of nursing practice, as its instructor of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Dr. Kelley, a Branford native, brings to NFC 42 years of experience in nursing with advanced practice specialty in Women’s Health.

Legislators seek shield in redistricting fight

TALLAHASSEE — Six lawmakers, including House Speaker Chris Sprowls and Sen. Jennifer Bradley, and legislative staff members have asked a judge for a protective order that would shield them from testifying in a lawsuit about the constitutionality of a new congressional redistricting plan.

Brawl results in five arrests

WHITE SPRINGS — Call it a fight, a brouhaha or a kerfuffle. Any way you slice it, five people were arrested Saturday night after police say a brawl broke out on the roadway on NW Gar Pond Court. According to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies responded around 9 p.m.

Florida coast aims for Ian recovery

FORT MYERS — An army of 42,000 utility workers has restored electricity to more than 2.5 million businesses and homes in Florida since Hurricane Ian’s onslaught, and Brenda Palmer’s place is among them. By the government’s count, she and her husband Ralph are part of a success story.
