Insurers OK’d to take Citizens policies

TALLAHASSEE — As homeowners continue piling into the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corp., regulators this week approved proposals that could lead to private insurers pulling as many as 184,000 policies from Citizens starting in October.

TALLAHASSEE — Nearly a month into a stifling heat wave, corrections officials are attempting to alleviate sweltering conditions in Florida’s unairconditioned prisons, but advocates for inmates say the efforts fall short and aren’t being carried out the same way at all facilities.

Inmate accused of mutilating dead body

An inmate at the Florida State Prison in Raiford faces new charges for acts committed in custody. Jaquaon Polk, 22, has been charged with mutilating, committing sexual abuse or otherwise grossly abuse of a deceased body on May 23, 2022.

Son sentenced two years for firearm silencers

JACKSONVILLE — A Live Oak man faces two years in federal prison for making and selling unregistered firearm silencers. Greg Eward, 25, was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard to two years in prison and three years of supervised release.

Suwannee sets sights on Somoa

LIVE OAK — Suwannee County could soon take an “important” step to landing a new company at its Catalyst Site. The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners will consider a business incentive grant application from Project Somoa at its 5:30 p.m.

Trump faces new charges in classified documents case

New charges — and a new defendant — added to the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump underscore how the Mar-a-Lago investigation is still very much ongoing, even as the focus has been on an expected indictment in a separate case related to the 2020 election.

Lafayette’s Lyons named Advisor of the Year

ORLANDO — Lafayette FFA Advisor Chad Lyons now has an additional title: Florida FFA Timothy H. Cribbs FFA Advisor of the Year. During the 95th Florida FFA State Convention at the Caribe Royale from June 19-23, Lyons was bestowed the state recognition.
