Sampson edges Crenshaw in city’s District 13

Todd Sampson was elected to Lake City Council Tuesday night in the closest race of any on the ballot. Sampson won the District 13 seat by a 37-vote margin, claiming 51.49% of the vote against James Crenshaw. Sampson won the District 13 race 639-602.

Keen elected tax collector

Kyle Keen rolled to victory in the Columbia County Tax Collector’s race with more than 82 percent of the county-wide vote in his favor. Keen, a Republican, defeated Libertarian Davie Parrish in the partisan race. Keen is a longtime employee of the tax collector’s office.

Voters pass all city charter amendments

Lake City voters gave their support to all eight amendments to the city charger that were presented on Tuesday’s ballot. All eight of the amendments were affirmed with at least a 60% voter approval.

Lines expected at the polls

In addition to a photo ID, Columbia County election officials are suggesting voters bring another item with them to the polls today: a chair.

Hutto due in court next week

JACKSONVILLE — Troy Hutto, charged in the death of a Lake City teen, will appear in a Jacksonville court next week. Hutto, the co-founder of the beach clothing brand, Salt Life, is scheduled for a 1 p.m. court hearing Nov. 9, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Department of Corrections.

Council discusses program to clean up city

Lake City officials are hoping a new program could help make properties around the city easier on the eyes. During a city council workshop Monday afternoon at the school board auditorium, city officials discussed the merits of a lien amnesty program.

JACKSONVILLE — The co-founder of the Salt Life brand has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a Lake City teen.

Sweat named assistant city manager

Daniel Sweat is coming home. Sweat, a longtime Lake City resident, was announced Friday as the city’s new assistant city manager. Sweat is scheduled to begin working on Monday.
