BRANFORD — Entering Tuesday’s Region 3-R championship, Branford hadn't even given up a set in four previous matches against Union County. However, with a trip to the state Final Four on the line, the top-seeded Buccaneers got pushed hard by the No. 3 seed Tigers from Lake Butler.

PREP FOOTBALL: Columbia still 9th in Region 1-4A but within a point of Rickards for final playoff spot

The bad news is that Columbia didn’t exactly get a ton of help in the playoff race Friday night. The good news? The Tigers pulled closer to the final playoff spot in Region 1-4A, though the amount of teams they can likely jump may be down to one. Columbia’s rating increased to 3.

District titles are becoming a yearly tradition for Columbia. The Tigers cruised to their fifth straight crown on Tuesday, winning the District 2-2A championship at Quail Heights with a 342 team total to finish 74 strokes ahead of runner-up Wakulla thanks three top-4 finishes.

GREEN COVE SPRINGS — The game nearly went sideways at the start for Columbia. Clay running back Lavaris Roberts caught a screen pass and went 71 yards toward the end zone. The only thing stopping him was Columbia defensive back Mekah Combs-Turner.
