Columbia weightlifter Sakiya Merriex was voted by the readers as the LCR Athlete of the Week for Dec. 2-7.
Merriex received 166 of the 385 votes cast through 4 p.m. Wednesday in our online poll following a week where she set new school records in the clean and jerk (125 pounds) and bench press (110 pounds) while tying her school record in the snatch (90 pounds) to sweep traditional and Olympic events in the Tigers’ quad meet win. She finished ahead of Fort White basketball player Zuri Hollie (67), Columbia soccer player Niki Sossie (65), Columbia soccer player Cody Bass (57), Fort White basketball player Jayden Jackson (19) and Suwannee wrestler Marshall White (11).
The next poll will be online this weekend. Nominees will be chosen from scores and stats uploaded to MaxPreps, sent in by coaches and from games attended by the LCR's reporters. Coaches can also send in nominees to jkroeger@lakecityreporter.com.
