GREEN COVE SPRINGS — The game nearly went sideways at the start for Columbia. Clay running back Lavaris Roberts caught a screen pass and went 71 yards toward the end zone. The only thing stopping him was Columbia defensive back Mekah Combs-Turner.

PREP FOOTBALL: Jackson leads Fort White to shutout over Hilliard on homecoming

FORT WHITE — From the opening kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium, it was quite apparent Fort White came ready to play. Even after putting up just one score in a middling first quarter against Hilliard, the Indians never felt threatened. Such is the case when facing a one-win team late in the season.

Suwannee girls golfer Ryan Donaldson shot a 10-under-62 to win the Jill Darr Invitational at the Hawkstone Country Club on Thursday. Donaldson finished three strokes ahead of runner-up Katelyn Huber from P.K. Yonge.

PREP SWIMMING: Columbia's Fair wins district title, qualifies for regionals in 2 events

Columbia girls swimmer Casey Fair won the District 2-3A title in the 100 backstroke on Tuesday with a time of 1:05.42, and she also punched her ticket to regionals in the 100 butterfly thanks to a runner-up finish with a time of 1:03.78.

VOLLEYBALL — Bishop Kenny 3, Suwannee 0: The No. 7 seed Bulldogs (16-8) saw their season end in a 25-10, 25-7, 25-13 sweep at the hands of the No. 2 seed Crusaders (21-6) in the Region 1-4A quarterfinals.

PREP FOOTBALL: Columbia aims to get playmakers more involved, keep playoff hopes vs. Clay

There’s no room for error for Columbia. With the Tigers still sitting a spot out of the Region 1-5A playoffs with two games to go, they can’t afford another loss or any hopes of reaching regionals for a 14th straight season go up in smoke.

PREP FOOTBALL: Fort White looking for the long ball against Hilliard

FORT WHITE — There will be opportunities for fireworks from the Fort White offense this week. The only question of whether the Indians can light them, however, lies in getting rid of distractions. Fort White (4-3) hosts Hilliard (1-7) for a 7:30 game Friday night.
