PREP ROUNDUP: CHS basketball teams sweep Suwannee

Darrien Jones had 17 points and five assists to lead Columbia’s boys basketball team to a 65-58 win over Suwannee on the road Saturday night. Jordan Smith also had 11 points and Kenney Gaines finished with nine points while Marcus Owens poured in eight for the Tigers (14-2).

Florida Gateway College and Pasco-Hernando State College is turning into quite the rivalry. Players even chirped back and forth heading to the locker room following Saturday’s Suncoast Conference opener. But the Timberwolves got the last word.

GIRLS SOCCER: Forest scores late goal to hand Columbia first loss of season

It was the first real test of the season and Columbia didn’t pass. Instead, the Lady Tigers suffered their first loss. Josie Leonard’s goal in the 71st minute lifted Forest to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Columbia in District 2-6A action at Tiger Stadium.

Prior to Thursday’s game, Columbia coach Anthony Perry tried to warn his team about the Hornets.  He told the Lady Tigers that Hawthorne gets out to fast starts and will be tough to handle.  “They didn’t hear me,” Perry said. “Hawthorne jumped on us and we never did recover. The whole was too big.
