As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the United States, athletes are stepping forward to donate to those in need.

Houston Texans left tackle and Lake City native Laremy Tunsil was the latest to do so on Monday, committing up to $250,000 to help with relief efforts. That will include donations to the Florida Gateway Food Bank right here in Lake City and the Star of Hope Mission in Houston.

Tunsil made the announcement via his Twitter account, which included a video.

“I want to help in critical times like this,” Tunsil said in the video, “so if you have any necessities such as your light bill, your water bill, your car bill, your rent, etc., what I’m going to have you guys do is send a picture of that to this email — laremycares@gmail.com.

“My team will go through the emails and help in any way that we can. A huge thank you to the workers out there who are putting their life on the line daily. Thank you. Peace, love, prosperity and go Texans.”

Tunsil followed that tweet up with another that included two images, with the second telling people to include a brief note explaining their current situation along with their bill to his email, laremycares@gmail.com. The former Columbia High star will have his team review all the submissions before giving on a need basis.

All submissions will be closed by April 5 at 11:59 pacific standard time.

Texans, Tunsil exchange contract proposals

Tunsil, who is entering the last year of his rookie deal, also exchanged contract proposals according to the Houston Chronicle on Monday. The Texans’ initial offer averaged $18.5 million, while Tunsil’s counter offer was “significantly higher” per reporter Aaron Wilson.

According to Wilson, Tunsil is seeking a deal averaging more than $20 million per season. Tunsil is set to make $10.35 this year.
