PREP ROUNDUP: Columbia hoops teams sweep Hamilton County

Marcus Peterson scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Columbia to an 81-56 win over Hamilton County in Jasper Friday night, its ninth in a row. Darrien Jones, Kenney Gaines and Jordan Smith all added 11 points, with Smith hitting three 3-pointers for the Tigers (20-2).

BOYS SOCCER: Crusaders top Tigers thanks to two PKs

The Columbia boys soccer team has suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since the opening week of the season.  But unlike the Tigers’ first home loss Tuesday with six starters out against Forest, they were much more competitive Friday in their 2-1 loss to Bishop Kenny.

GIRLS WEIGHTLIFTING: Chasteen, Hoyle break school records to win district titles

One school record wasn’t enough for Morgan Hoyle at Friday’s District 2-2A meet. She wanted two. Hoyle capped off a stellar day with a 145-pound lift on her final clean and jerk rep, breaking her school record of 140 in the 129-pound weight class.

PREP FOOTBALL: Bell, Camiel take home MVP honors at Columbia's team banquet

Columbia coach Brian Allen received a text this week from Virginia wide receivers coach Marques Hagans. The Cavaliers had just conducted an in-home visit with CHS wide receiver Marquez Bell. Their head coach, Bronco Mendenhall, wanted to get Allen’s opinion on Bell.

BOYS & GIRLS SOCCER: FHSAA announces district tournament brackets

The FHSAA announced the district tournaments brackets for soccer on Thursday. Columbia’s boys team is the No. 5 seed in District 2-6A and will travel to No. 4 seed Forest on Feb. 3, with the winner facing top-seeded Lincoln.

Florida and LSU nearly played to overtime Tuesday for the third time in four games. The Tigers survived a late rally by the Gators, who scored 20 points in the final three and a half minutes after falling behind. Keytonae Johnson had a chance to tie it up with 0.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Columbia out to prove it can compete with Lincoln in district rematch

Erin Turral was unstoppable the last time Columbia faced Lincoln. It was a long night for the Lady Tigers, who fell to the Lady Trojans 76-42 thanks to Turral’s 36 points. No matter what Columbia tried defensively, Turral found the basket and hit six 3-pointers.
