GAINESVILLE — Bryce Young heard all about the Swamp. He knew it would be deafening at times and difficult, if not impossible, for a visiting quarterback to communicate. He also understood the key to handling such a raucous environment: a fast start.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY: FGC wins Alligator Lake XC Invite

Florida Gateway College won the 13th Annual Alligator Lake XC Invite on Friday thanks to five runners placing in the top 20, led by Ariel Anderson’s third-place finish. Anderson finished with a time of 21:54.4 for the Timberwolves, who tallied 59 points to edge Thomas’ 62.

Columbia started fast then stumbled for nearly two quarters. Somehow, the Tigers still led by double digits throughout. The Englewood Rams were just simply the inferior team on Friday night.

FORT WHITE — The Indians needed something, anything, to get back in the game. After having a pair of punts blocked in the first half leading to a pair of Santa Fe scores, Fort White could’ve been content with putting together a consistent drive, even if it didn’t end with points.

MIAMI — A former University of Miami football player pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of killing a teammate outside a South Florida apartment complex in 2006.

Columbia’s swim teams won 12 events between the boys and girls in a tri-meet against Baker County and Middleburg on Thursday. Individual winners for the girls included Casey Fair (2:24.17 in 200 freestyle; 6:28.92 in 500 freestyle), Kaydence Clark (1:07.
