Drugs present ‘problem’ for Hamilton CI visitor

JASPER — A K-9 search at Hamilton Correctional Institution earlier this month became a “problem” for one visitor. According to a report from the Florida Department of Corrections - Office of Inspector General, a K-9 checkpoint operation as conducted at the prison on Jan. 15.

WHITE SPRINGS — An Arkansas prisoner now faces manslaughter charges in Hamilton County. Shaquila Dakwan Walters Robinson, 44, was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on Tuesday evening for negligent homicide-manslaughter, stemming from the 2018 death of her husband in White Springs.

Lafayette assesses fees on RV sites

MAYO — Recreational vehicle campgrounds will start picking up more of the cost for services in Lafayette County. During its meeting Monday evening, the Lafayette County Commission unanimously approved charging RV campgrounds one special assessment for every 10 RV sites within the property.

BELL — Seeing needs in his community, Jeff Jordan came up with a “unique” solution. R&J Fuel Stop is slated to open Wednesday, filling those needs that Jordan saw in Gilchrist County. A grand opening is scheduled for Feb. 10. “I went ahead and addressed them all here in this store,” Jordan said.

Mora resigns as Lafayette fire chief

MAYO — Lafayette County is looking for a new fire chief. Josue “Josh” Mora resigned as the chief of the Lafayette County Volunteer Fire Department, effective Jan. 13. He had served as the department’s chief for three years, serving with the county department for five years total.

Solar farm escapes damage in fire

WELLBORN – A Suwannee County solar farm appeared to escape damage from a brush fire Monday afternoon. Firefighters with Suwannee County Fire Rescue responded to a brush fire at the Florida Power & Light Echo River Solar Energy Center around 3 p.m.
