Living history: Alumni, guests celebrate Richardson historic marker

Richardson High School’s stint as the area’s segregated high school for African-American students ended several decades ago, but that wasn’t evident on Saturday. What was evident was pride in the school all these many years later.

TALLAHASSEE — Legislation that attacks the public’s right to know will be heard on the Florida House of Representatives floor today. Chuck Brannan, the Republican representative from District 10 that includes Columbia, Suwannee and Hamilton counties, said Monday he expects to vote against HB 7049.

Comic book lovers and collectors, Star Wars supporters, video game gurus, anime aficionados, and pretty much anyone else who was interested in comic culture had a local safe haven Saturday.

CCSO vying for reaccreditation

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to receive reaccreditation from the state. The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation will have a team of assessors in Lake City to begin the process on April 4.

Marines raise $40K at Suwannee Lights

A group of local Marines raised approximately $40,000 from the military display in the Suwannee Lights at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park.

FGC offers second free summer course

Free summer classes are twice as nice at Florida Gateway College. After announcing a free on-campus math course last week, FGC announced Monday that students can take any course up to three credits for free this summer.

Crash sends 13 to hospital

MAYO — Thirteen people were sent to the hospital in Gainesville following an early-morning wreck in Lafayette County. A 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer combination heading west on County Road 354 just south of the Suwannee River and the Hal W. Adams Bridge around 6:30 a.m.

‘Pride of hearts’ to be recognized: Historical marker at Richardson to be dedicated Saturday

Alumni and friends will have an opportunity to celebrate Richardson High School during a ceremony on Saturday, where a historic monument will be dedicated in honor of the school. The historical dedication of Richardson will take place at the Richardson Community Center, 255 NE Coach Anders Lane.

Welfare check sparked armed dispute

Concern over someone’s wellbeing put a victim in harm’s way themselves Tuesday afternoon. A Columbia County Sheriff’s Office report states that a well-being check sparked the shooting incident that momentarily closed U.S. Highway 90 in between Lake City and Wellborn.
