It didn’t matter the subject. The group of students sitting in JL Kirby’s classroom Thursday afternoon answered questions on a variety of topics. Humanities, foreign language, art, mythology, music theory. It was all fair game.

Murder suspect captured

One week after getting away, a South Florida murder suspect didn’t have the same luck Wednesday. Katrell Montan Hubbard, a 25-year-old from New Port Richey, was arrested by the Lake City Police Department with assistance from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday afternoon.

Columbia County has a shallow pool of candidates in its search for a new economic development director. Only three people applied by Tuesday’s application deadline, one of which just submitted a resume and not an application for the position.

LIVE OAK — CSX’s plans for a new communications tower wasn’t derailed Tuesday. But the Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners did pump the brakes on the railroad company’s proposed project.

Brief standoff ends peacefully

It was over almost as soon as it began. Minutes after alerting the public to a standoff on East Duval Street, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office had their suspect in custody. Samuel Scott Anderson, 32, exited the house at the corner of East Duval Street and SE McCray Avenue around 11:35 a.m.
