‘Lifesaving’ deputies honored

Two Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies have been honored for their quick actions following a May lightning strike. Sheriff Mark Hunter presented the “Lifesaving Award” to Brian Scott and Shayne Newman on Friday for their response to a May 16 incident in which three people were struck by lightning.

The Gateway Crossing commercial development is cooking up a pair of additions. According to documents from the City of Lake City, Gateway Crossing owner Parker Neely plans to add a Sonic Drive-In as well as a RibCrib restaurant.

A large influx of federal funding is being targeted for improvements and additions at schools with the Columbia County School District. The school district has scheduled a public hearing on its $127.8 million budget and proposed tax changes for 6 p.m.

The Columbia County School Board is full once again. Cherie Hill was appointed to the vacant District 3 seat on the school board by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday. With the appointment, Hill will finish out Steve Nelson’s term.

Another day, another shooting incident, this time near the Annie Mattox Recreation Center. The Lake City Police Department received a call around 1 a.m. Friday in reference to reports of gunfire along NE Fairview Street, according to an LCPD release.
