Liquor stores haven’t been feeling any pain

People enjoy pulling a cork or popping a top during normal times, but local consumers under stress, as they are now in pandemic uncertainty, are hitting the bottle much harder. Boozing it up means business is good, says one liquor store operator in Lake City.

UWSV relief fund will give some a safety net

The covid-19 pandemic is hitting the people of North Florida especially hard, with nearly 51 percent of Columbia, Hamilton, Lafayette and Suwannee counties struggling to afford basic necessities, according to United Way of Suwannee Valley.

Layoffs loom at HAECO; ‘some or all’ look to lose jobs

In a turn of events expected to deal a heavy blow to the local economy, HAECO, one of the largest employers in the county, is bracing for layoffs. The aircraft maintenance firm’s facility at Lake City Gateway Airport employs 600 people, said general manager Stephen Coley.

Food meant for theme parks feeds local folks

The food no longer wanted or needed by Florida’s theme parks is finding its way into the pantries of struggling Columbia County families.

Covid-19: Senior Meals on Wheels program kicks into high gear during crisis

Columbia County Senior Services has ramped up its Meals on Wheels program as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the area. The agency has also added a shopping assistance program and telephone reassurance program for local seniors during the crisis.

Lake City Rotary Club members experienced their first combination drive-through dining and virtual meeting experience Thursday after picking up lunch in a motorcade line, then retiring to their homes or offices to experience an on-line meeting for the first time in the club’s 98-year history.

Tax collector’s office still helping residents despite obstacles

It may be a less-than-ideal setting, but the service being provided by the Columbia County Tax Collector’s Office staff during the past two weeks has been essential and embraced by the public.
