NASA astronauts go back to the future with capsule launch

CAPE CANAVERAL — It’s back to the future as NASA astronauts launch again from the U.S. — aboard a retro-style “Right Stuff” capsule. Make no mistake: This is not your father’s — or grandfather’s — capsule. SpaceX’s Dragon crew capsule outshines NASA’s old Apollo spacecraft in virtually every way.
The Department of Economic Opportunity estimate for April showed 1.218 million Floridians qualified as unemployed from a statewide workforce of 9.44 million. That was up from 457,000 people unemployed in March. The overall labor force also fell by nearly 9 percent last month.

Jobless rate in county jumps to 9.6 percent

More than three-quarters of a million Floridians — 2,561 of them from Columbia County — joined the ranks of the unemployed as the coronavirus pandemic fully took hold in April, pushing the state’s jobless rate to 12.9%, according to state figures released Friday. The rate was up from a revised 4.

CHS library getting major overhaul during summer

Blood donors needed in wake of covid-19

The impact of covid-19 continues to affect the local blood supply, as canceled blood drives throughout the coming months are causing a significant drop in donations.  Many businesses, schools and churches remain closed during this time, and all typically host drives with LifeSouth.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Public health officials in some states are accused of bungling coronavirus infection statistics or even using a little sleight of hand to deliberately make things look better than they are.

Universities look to reopen in fall

State university system Chancellor Marshall Criser next week will present guidelines for reopening university campuses in the fall, after students were sent home in March to curb the spread of covid-19.

Ichetucknee Springs open to tubers once again

Tire Mart keeps rolling along

After business stalled out in April, Tire Mart of Lake City has rounded a corner and is actually on track to see more sales than last year, one of the co-owners said as cars continued returning to the roads Thursday.

Industrial park RR spur underway, construction crews prep for historic step

The future is on rails, Columbia County officials say, and construction crews have begun working on the railroad all the livelong day.
