McAlpin man accused of sexual assault

McALPIN — A McAlpin man was arrested early Sunday morning on allegations of sexual assault. According to a Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office report, 28-year-old Jalen Ralls had been drinking alcohol while watching football on Saturday evening.

Motorcyclist dies in crash with pickup

COLUMBIA CITY — A motorcyclist was killed Monday evening when he struck a pickup turning in front of him south of Lake City. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a pickup pulling a trailer was headed east on SW King Street when it tried to turn left onto SW Dyal Avenue around 5:10 p.m.

DeSantis seeks dismissal of suit by suspended prosecutor

ST. PETERSBURG — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants a federal judge to throw out a free speech lawsuit filed by a Democratic prosecutor he suspended from office over statements about not pursuing criminal charges in abortion, transgender rights and certain low-level cases.

Pedestrian dies after Friday night crash

O’BRIEN — A traffic collision in Suwannee County turned fatal on Friday night. According to a Florida Highway Patrol release, an SUV, driven by a 48-year-old O’Brien woman, was heading south on U.S. Highway 27 around 8:40 p.m. on Friday.

Judge grants Trump bid for special master in document search case

WASHINGTON — In a legal victory for former President Donald Trump, a federal judge on Monday granted his request for a special master to review documents seized by the FBI from his Florida home and temporarily halted the Justice Department’s use of the records for investigative purposes.

Leak ruins NASA moon rocket launch bid; next try weeks away

CAPE CANAVERAL — NASA’s new moon rocket sprang another dangerous fuel leak Saturday, forcing launch controllers to call off their second attempt this week to send a crew capsule into lunar orbit with test dummies. The inaugural flight is now off for weeks, if not months.

Tropical Storm Danielle strengthens into first hurricane

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Danielle strengthened into a hurricane Friday morning — the first of an unusually quiet storm season. The storm is not currently a threat to any land. The storm’s maximum sustained winds were clocked at 75 mph (120 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

NASA aims for Saturday launch

CAPE CANAVERAL — NASA aimed for a Saturday launch of its new moon rocket, after fixing fuel leaks and working around a bad engine sensor that foiled the first try.

‘Tool time’ tax holiday starts today

TALLAHASSEE — The state’s inaugural “tool time” sales-tax holiday on tools and other home-repair items will kick off today. The seven-day holiday will allow shoppers to avoid paying sales taxes on numerous home-repair and construction items through Friday.
