PREP BASEBALL: School board finally approves Chris Howard as new Columbia coach after he agreed to job in May

The Columbia County School Board officially approved Chris Howard as Columbia’s new baseball coach at Tuesday’s meeting, nearly a month after Howard agreed to take the job. Howard was recommended to the school board at the end of May by Columbia principal Trey Hosford.

PREP FOOTBALL: Suwannee looking for Week 1 matchup after Dunnellon backs out at last minute

LIVE OAK — The schedule was done and Suwannee coach Kyler Hall’s biggest concern was navigating a slate that included three teams that played in state semifinals a year ago. Until this week. That’s when Suwannee announced it was looking for a season-opening opponent Aug. 27 at Langford Stadium.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: CHS grad Brock Edge will continue career at UNF

Former Columbia baseball standout Brock Edge announced on Friday that he’ll attend North Florida for his final year of eligibility while he pursues his Master’s degree as a graduate transfer. Edge, a 2017 CHS grad, played the past two seasons at Florida but entered the transfer portal on June 8.

FLAG FOOTBALL: Suwannee’s Maci Campbell named to all-state third team in Class 1A

LIVE OAK — Completing its first full season, the Suwannee’s flag football program has already produced its first all-state performer. The Florida Athletic Coaches Association flag football all-state teams were released Thursday and SHS sophomore Maci Campbell was named to the Class 1A third team.

PREP FOOTBALL: QB Tyler Jefferson transfers to Hawthorne from Fort White

FORT WHITE — Tyler Jefferson has transferred to Hawthorne, leaving behind a big hole in Fort White’s offense. Jefferson, a rising junior, was the Indians’ starting quarterback for 14 games across his freshman and sophomore seasons.

NFL: Jags taking 'cautious' approach with Lawrence's hamstring
