Lafayette forestry finishes national runner-up

INDIANAPOLIS — The Lafayette FFA Forestry Evaluation Team is the second best in the country. During the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis on Oct. 29-31, the Lafayette High team finished as national runner-up, earning “Gold Team” honors.

Lafayette Middle FFA wins state forestry title

PERRY — Lafayette Middle School’s forestry team are state champions once again. During the Florida FFA Forestry CDE state finals Nov. 6 at the Florida Forest Festival Grounds in Perry, Lafayette Middle topped the 12 district champions from across the state for the fourth time in five years.

Mayo man ejected, killed in rollover

MAYO — A Lafayette County man was killed Tuesday night when his car overturned northwest of Mayo. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 20-year-old man was traveling west on County Road 536 when his car drove off the road and into the grassy shoulder around10:55 p.m.

Lafayette FBLA triumphs at state leadership conference

DAYTONA BEACH — The Lafayette High School FBLA Chapter sent 24 students (6th through 12th grades) to the 2025 Florida FBLA State Leadership Conference in Daytona Beach on Nov. 7-8. The chapter achieved significant recognition, earning honors for bringing the most students to the conference.

Fort White woman killed in motorized tricycle collision

FORT WHITE — A Fort White woman was killed Thursday afternoon when the trike she was riding collided with a car in southern Columbia County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 69-year-old woman was headed west on County Road 778 near the intersection with SW Fortune Way around 1 p.m.

Legislators await tax plan

During a recent shopping trip, Sen. Corey Simon picked up more than just hardware. Rather the Tallahassee Republican also obtained more concerns from constituents about Florida’s property tax problem at that hardware store.

Naming historic Live Oak city hall after Yulee approved

The historic old Live Oak City Hall officially has a new name. During its marathon meeting Monday night, the Live Oak City Council approved the final reading of an ordinance to rename the historic building that houses the Suwannee County Chamber of Commerce as the John W.

Simon: Mental health needs addressed before campus carry

It’s an image that Sen. Corey Simon won’t soon forget. In April, shortly after the shooting on the Florida State University campus, Simon watched the video of the two murdered victims being shot alongside law enforcement officers.

Live Oak expanding CRA district

Live Oak’s Community Redevelopment Agency district is growing. After hearing a presentation from Inspire Placemarking’s Megan Barrow, the Live Oak City Council unanimously approved a resolution to expand the city’s CRA district.
