DeSantis plans to sign social media bill

After vetoing an earlier version, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday made clear he will sign a measure (HB 3) that seeks to keep children off social-media platforms. “We really want our kids to not just be wedded to a handful of social media apps,” DeSantis said during an appearance in Polk County.

Trump trial delays cast doubt on verdicts before election

A likely delay in Donald Trump’s hush money trial is the latest complication of prosecutors’ efforts to try his other criminal cases before Nov. 5, raising the prospect that he could be elected president — and perhaps take office — before being tried on the most serious charges against him.

Qualifying period opens Monday for LO elections

LIVE OAK — The final qualifying period for candidates in the City of Live Oak starts Monday. Starting at noon Monday and running through noon Friday, candidates seeking city office can pay a $50 filing fee to qualify. The city’s qualification period by petition passed in February.

Florida jobless claims remain flat

The number of first-time unemployment claims in Florida remains relatively low, with an estimated 5,752 applications filed during the week that ended March 9, according to a report released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor.

‘No time like fair time’

LIVE OAK — Even after 100 years, there is “no time life fair time” in Suwannee County. The 109th annual Suwannee County Fair opens Friday at the Suwannee County Fairgrounds, 1302 11th Street SW in Live Oak. The nine-day fair runs through March 23 with gates opening at 6 p.m. daily.

Jordan seeking re-election as tax collector

LIVE OAK — Sharon Jordan, Suwannee County’s tax collector, is seeking a fifth term in office. Jordan, who has worked in the Suwannee County Tax Collector’s office for 45 years, including the past 16 as the tax collector, has announced she is seeking re-election this fall.
