CCSO vying for reaccreditation

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to receive reaccreditation from the state. The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation will have a team of assessors in Lake City to begin the process on April 4.

FGC offers second free summer course

Free summer classes are twice as nice at Florida Gateway College. After announcing a free on-campus math course last week, FGC announced Monday that students can take any course up to three credits for free this summer.

Crash sends 13 to hospital

MAYO — Thirteen people were sent to the hospital in Gainesville following an early-morning wreck in Lafayette County. A 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer combination heading west on County Road 354 just south of the Suwannee River and the Hal W. Adams Bridge around 6:30 a.m.

‘Pride of hearts’ to be recognized: Historical marker at Richardson to be dedicated Saturday

Alumni and friends will have an opportunity to celebrate Richardson High School during a ceremony on Saturday, where a historic monument will be dedicated in honor of the school. The historical dedication of Richardson will take place at the Richardson Community Center, 255 NE Coach Anders Lane.

Welfare check sparked armed dispute

Concern over someone’s wellbeing put a victim in harm’s way themselves Tuesday afternoon. A Columbia County Sheriff’s Office report states that a well-being check sparked the shooting incident that momentarily closed U.S. Highway 90 in between Lake City and Wellborn.

FGC + summer = free math classes

This is one math problem anybody can solve. The cost of taking an on-campus math course at Florida Gateway College this summer equals zero. The college announced Thursday the plan for the free classes at it aims to fulfill its mission of making quality, affordable education is accessible to all.

LCMS lockdown shooter nabbed

A week after causing a Lake City school to lock down, a shooting suspect was locked up. Columbia County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested 39-year-old Darris Moore, of Lake City, on Monday for a shooting incident Feb. 14 that caused a lockdown at Lake City Middle School.

Armed man at council meeting deemed no threat

An armed man carrying a concealed weapon left Tuesday night’s city council meeting at the behest of law enforcement after a “bulge” was spotted under his jacket. “He was wearing a sports coat and we observed the bulge underneath the coat,” said Gerald Butler, Lake City interim police chief.
