Man killed trying to pass I-75 traffic

A Port Saint Lucie man was killed Sunday morning after driving into the rear of a tractor trailer while trying bypass traffic on Interstate 75. A Florida Highway Patrol release stated a semi truck was parked in the emergency lane of southbound I-75 at 6:55 a.m.

Vann Carpet settling in

A downtown Lake City institution has officially moved a little farther west in the city. Vann Carpet One, which has been located in the heart of downtown since it opened July 5, 1947, is now open in in the old Ashley Furniture building at 161 Faith Road.

9th Scrabble tourney to support saving Club House

For the first time, the annual Scrabble tournament will not be held at the Club House on Lake Isabella. But this year’s event does have a venue that event organizers say is a great temporary replacement.

Breaking ground on new station

Columbia County Fire Rescue’s busiest station is getting a new home, likely within the next six months. Columbia County Fire Station 51, on NW Lake Jeffery Road, is getting a new hardened station. The new station is expected to open by Aug. 15, according to sign on the premises.

When the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office talked about utilizing one of its older Ford Explorers for PIT training, Sgt. Tim Ball thought it was a perfect opportunity to partner with the Columbia County School District.

Teenage girl’s body found along roadway

A dead teenage girl’s body was found in western Columbia County on Thursday morning. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is still awaiting results of an autopsy at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Jacksonville to determine cause of death.

Lake City woman killed in SR47 crash

FORT WHITE — A Lake City woman was killed Thursday morning when she pulled out in front of a semi truck on State Road 47. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 63-year-old Lake City woman was headed east on County Road 238 (Elim Church Road) at 6:05 a.m.

$31M for area projects requested in House

A year after nearly $7 million was allocated to Columbia County projects in the state budget, Rep. Chuck Brannan is seeking almost twice that much in appropriations for the county this session. The 60-day legislative session opens Tuesday in Tallahassee.

Pushed into service: LCFD traditionally welcomes tower truck

A few firefighters from the Lake City Fire Department had sweat dripping from their brow on Tuesday afternoon. The cause of the sweat wasn’t the result of fighting hot flames, but rather a little physical exertion.
