State unemployment increases to 3.8%

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s unemployment rate inched up to 3.8% in August, after holding steady at 3.7% since April, according to a report released Friday by the state Department of Commerce. The August rate represented 424,000 Floridians qualified as unemployed, up 7,000 from July.

Heroic efforts recalled in annual Patriot Day ceremony

VALDOSTA — Out of the six songs sung at the Suwannee Riverkeeper Songwriting Contest at the WWALS River Revue earlier month, the best was deemed to be from a Dowling Park group.

Hurricane season forecast eased

While the U.S. remains forecast to be directly affected by three to six hurricanes before the Nov. 30 end of the hurricane season, the meteorology company AccuWeather on Thursday scaled back predictions for the season.

LIVE OAK — A great weekend is waiting local music lovers at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Gainesville country artist Trey Tucker brings his band to the stage from 7-10 p.m. Friday before the Big Engine Band performs Saturday from 8-11 p.m.
