ST. PETERSBURG — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has appealed a judge’s ruling that the governor exceeded his authority by ordering school boards not to impose strict mask requirements on students to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

St. Augustine fugitive captured in Suwannee County, again

McALPIN — Lightning can strike twice. For the second time in seven months, a St. Augustine fugitive was located and apprehended in Suwannee County.

WHITE SPRINGS — Free covid-19 vaccinations will be administered Saturday in southern Hamilton County. The Hamilton County Health Department will be hosting the vaccination event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its White Springs Clinic, 16811 Spring Street in White Springs.

Ida likely to drive up gas prices

After Florida motorists have seen a drop in gasoline prices in recent weeks, Hurricane Ida is likely to make it more expensive to fill up. The AAA auto club said Monday that the massive hurricane, which made landfall Sunday in Louisiana, caused futures prices for gasoline to increase.

NEW ORLEANS — The levees, floodwalls and floodgates that protect New Orleans held up against Hurricane Ida’s fury, passing their toughest test since the federal government spent billions of dollars to upgrade a system that catastrophically failed when Hurricane Katrina struck 16 years ago.
