Southbound I-75 lanes closing Thursday night

Lanes will be closed on southbound Interstate 75 in southern Columbia County tonight. The Florida Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that lane closures will take place in the southbound lanes of I-75 at mile markers 411 and 417 for asphalt repairs tonight.

School board OKs tax increase; reduced millage

The Columbia County School Board technically tentatively approved a tax increase Tuesday night. During a special meeting Tuesday night, the board unanimously adopted its tentative millage rate of 5.349 mills, which is a reduction from the current 5.391 mills.

Barbers hosting 10th Back to School Bash

Backpacks, paper, pencils and other utensils youngsters need for school, along with free haircuts, will be given out this weekend during a community event. The 10th annual Community Barbers Back to School Bash will take place 3-6 p.m.

New Niblack Elementary hosting tours Thursday

Local residents and students will have an opportunity to first view the new Niblack Elementary School and the relocated Eastside Elementary School when both schools hold events Thursday morning. Niblack Elementary School will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony 9-10 a.m. on Thursday.

FGC hosting One-Stop Enrollment Day

Florida Gateway College is looking to speed up the enrollment process Thursday for new and returning students. On Thursday, the college will hold its One-Stop Enrollment Day for Fall 2025. The event is open to new, readmit, and prospective students and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Man hit, killed walking on CR 240

A Lake City man was hit and killed while walking on County Road 240 on Monday evening. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Mayo woman was headed west on CR 240 at 6:20 p.m. Monday when she encountered a Lake City man walking on the roadway just west of U.S. Highway 441.

LCPD offering glimpse with Citizen’s Police Academy

Local police are on the lookout for residents interested in learning more about the inner workings of law enforcement. The Lake City Police Department is set to host its Citizens Police Academy beginning Thursday, Aug. 7. The class will meet over the following 10 weeks each Thursday from 6-9 p.m.
