LIVE OAK — The new school year started with a bang — and a crash — in Suwannee County.

A Suwannee County school bus backed into a car Thursday morning, the first day for students in the 2023-24 academic year, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

An FHP release states that the school bus was southbound on 153rd Road with a 2016 Kia Forte following around 7:55 a.m. when the driver — a 61-year-old Live Oak man realized he missed his turn onto 52nd Street.

The release states the bus driver, not seeing anything behind him, started backing up and into the front end of the car.

Nine middle school and high school students were on the bus at the time of the accident. None were injured, according to FHP. Neither was the driver.

The driver of Kia, a 25-year-old Live Oak woman, was also uninjured.

The bus driver was cited for improper backing.
