JASPER — A Hamilton County child was hit Tuesday morning while crossing the road to board a school bus.
The child, an 8-year-old girl, was airlifted to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville in critical condition according to a Florida Highway Patrol release.
FHP states the child was waiting for the bus in a private drive on 119th Place east of U.S. Highway 41 around 7:10 a.m. Tuesday.
When the bus stopped on U.S. 41 next to the child and deployed its red stop signs and yellow flashing lights, the child began crossing the road, according to FHP.
An SUV, driven by a 19-year-old Mayo man, was headed north on U.S. 41 and didn’t stop for the bus stop signs. The SUV’s left mirror hit the girl, according to FHP.
