Deep Creek residents aim to revive fire station

Some northern Columbia County residents are looking to reopen a volunteer fire station. County officials, though, say the Deep Creek Fire Station never closed. Michelle Geiger is one of the residents in the Deep Creek area leading a push to bring aid back to that portion of the county.

Jacksonville man caught following search

A Jacksonville man was apprehended Monday afternoon after fleeing from authorities and then being tracked by K9 teams.

Harris campaign rally attracts local Democrats, state party chair

“When we vote, we win” was the signature chant heard at a political rally for Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, on Sunday afternoon. The people getting inspiration from the chant were a group of Columbia County residents at the Columbia County Women’s Club building.

FWHS student charged with school threat

FORT WHITE — A Fort White High School student was arrested Monday for posting a school threat on social media. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office charged 17-year-old Christopher Smith Jr. with a second-degree felony for posting the threat.

Why is city hiking taxes?

County seeks end to private utility problems

A private water utility’s request to the Columbia County Commission for a rate increase could instead end up costing the provider. Not only did the commission unanimously deny the request from Michael Smallridge for a price index rate adjustment on the Lance Water System of 2.

County raising fire fee slightly; others remain flat

Fire protection in Columbia County is going up slightly. The tax rate, though, will likely not be. During its Thursday meeting, the Columbia County Commission set the final fire and solid waste assessments, while also approving the preliminary millage rate.
