First covid-19 death reported in Hamilton County

JASPER — Hamilton County suffered its first covid-19 death Thursday when a 72-year-old woman died from the virus, the Florida Department of Health reported. The woman was hospitalized at the time of her passing.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of a member of our community,” said Florida Department of Health in Hamilton County Administrator Thomas Moffses. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who is no longer with us.”

As of Friday, Hamilton County had 261 total covid-19 cases. The individuals confirmed to have covid-19 range in age from 3 to 84; 221 are from Jasper, 33 are from Jennings, four are from White Springs and three are non-Florida residents.

The Florida Department of Health in Hamilton County is committed to working with community partners to prevent the spread of covid-19. It continues to be important for everyone to practice social distancing and remain at home other than for essential and necessary activities. Social distancing is one thing we all can do to prevent further spread of covid-19 and to prevent deaths, particularly in the more vulnerable populations such as in persons over the age of 65 or persons with underlying medical
conditions.

CDC updated recommendations for face coverings

The CDC now recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus.
