PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Lafayette girls place second, boys take third at District 3-1A meet

The Lafayette girls were runner-up while the boys placed third at the District 3-1A meet at Macaly on Wednesday.

Joaquin Ramirez and Karlos Murphy won the Hornets’ lone district titles, with Ramirez winning the 400 hurdles (1:04.96) and Murphy leaping to victory in the high jump (1.92m). They were two of 10 Hornets to qualify for regionals in seven events for the boys, with Ramirez also moving on in the 110 hurdles (second, 18.58m) and triple jump (third, 11.50m).

Behind Ramirez and Murphy, the boys finished with 118 points behind Maclay (165) and Jefferson County. The girls tallied 78 points for second as Maclay ran away with the title with 320 points.

Kiami McKnight qualified in two events for the boys, placing second in the 200 dash (22.82) and fourth in the 100 dash (11.25), while Dennis Carver also moved on in two events with a third-place finish in the 110 hurdle (19.27) and a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles (1:05.81).

Joseph Smith followed Carver in the 400 hurdles, placing fourth (19.78). Frank Sarmiento was also a two-event qualifier, placing fourth in the 1600 (4:59.47) while also helping the 4x800 relay team with Cason Driver, Durand Driver and Alex Hernandez place fourth (9:24.17).

Diego Garcia was another regional qualifier for the boys, finishing fourth in the high jump (1.62m).

There were no district champions for the Lafayette girls but several finished in the top four to qualify for regionals, led by two second-place finishes from Destiny Ramirez (1.27m in high jump) and Brandy Posada (8.95m in triple jump). Sophia Kendrick tied with Ramirez in the high jump with a 1.27m leap for third, while Destiny Ramirez placed third in the discus (23.33m) and Libby Beach was third in the 100 hurdles (18.63) ahead of teammate Norma Molina in fourth (18.80).

Beach also placed fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:20.12) and Angela Pye was fourth in the shot put (7.98m). The girls 4x100 relay team (Hallyn Hurst, Carra Clark, Posada and Molina) and 4x400 relay team (Hurst, Mallory Moseley, Kendrick and Ramirez) both took fourth as well with times of 56.97 and 5:24.74, respectively.

The Region 1-1A meet is scheduled f for May 6 at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.
