PREP ROUNDUP: CHS wins in girls hoops, boys hoops & boys soccer; wrestling takes third at Gator Brawl

Na’Haviya Paxton scored 25 points with six rebounds and four assists to lead Columbia to a 57-54 win over District 3-6A leader Creekside at home on Saturday.

Paxton broke a 51-all tie with a jumper late in the game. Anzarria Jerkins then came up with a steal and dished the ball back to Paxton for a layup to put the Lady Tigers (16-5) up 55-51.

The Lady Knights (11-6) answered with a three to pull back to within a point. Paxton then went to the foul line and knocked down both free throws and Columbia held off a final shot from Creekside to escape with the victory.

Jerkins finished with 10 steals and nine points while Bree Dixon also had nine points. Taylor Ivery had four points and six assists and Keturah Taylor held down the paint with 10 rebounds and four blocks to go with her three points.

Columbia travels to Lincoln for a District 2-6A match on Thursday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marcus Peterson was everywhere on Saturday, scoring 23 points and grabbing 20 rebounds for a double-double to lead Columbia to a 69-57 win over Eustis in the Martin Luther King Jr. Shootout at Forest High School.

Jordan Smith also scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers, and D’Andre Jefferson added 12 points for the Tigers, who won their seventh straight to improve to 17-2.

Darrien Jones chipped in with nine points, six assists and four rebounds against the Panthers, who fell to 10-5.

BOYS SOCCER

Columbia beat Gadsden County 5-1 at home on Saturday to end a five-game winless streak.

Izzy Cisse, Tanner Pierce, Max Bavar, Christian Fernandes and Jason Caballero all scored a goal for the Tigers (7-5-6). Cisse also assisted Pierce’s goal while Pierce assisted Bavar and Caballero assisted Fernandes.

The Jaguars fell to 10-8-1.

WRESTLING

Columbia placed third at the Gator Brawl hosted by Wewahitcha High School.

Alex McGuigan and Jaycob Jones led the way for the Tigers with first-place finishes in the 138 and 285-pound weight classes. Obie Smith had the team’s next best finish, taking second at 152.

Other placers for Columbia were Brett Millard (106), Ian McGuigan (132) and Preston O’Quinn (160) in third; Thomas Greene (138), Joseph Rice (170) and Shawn Raggins (195) in fourth; and Cooper Mote (126) and Daveyon Brown (145) in sixth.

Columbia will compete in the Rob Hermann Hurricane Cup Duals next Friday and Saturday at Citrus High School.
