PREP ROUNDUP: Branford, Suwannee advance to district finals in volleyball

VOLLEYBALL

— Leon 3, Columbia 0: No. 3 seed Columbia was swept by No. 2 seed Leon in a 25-12, 25-12, 25-15 final at LHS. The Lions (13-11) advanced to face top-seeded Chiles, which swept No. 4 seed Lincoln, in the district championship Thursday. Sinei Wood led CHS offensively with seven kills to go with 21 digs and two blocks, while Kayla Goodloe had five kills. Avery Sandlin added 17 digs defensively and setter Ava Christie finished with 15 assists go along with 14 digs The loss likely means the end of the season for the Tigers (14-9), who entered the district tournament ranked ninth in Region 1-5A behind Leon.

— Suwannee 3, Godby 2: Top-seeded Suwannee escaped with a 25-13, 25-11, 22-25, 21-25, 15-12 win over No. 4 seed Godby in the District 2-4A semifinals at home Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (15-7) will host No, 2 seed Wakulla in the district championship Thursday night at 5:30. Wakulla swept No. 3 seed Rickards in the other semifinal Tuesday. Suwannee is trying to win its first district title since 2016 and clinch its first playoff berth since 2018.

— Branford 3, Dixie County 0: Top-seeded Branford swept No. 4 seed Dixie County 25-13, 25-11, 25-21 at DCHS on Tuesday. It marked the Buccaneers (23-3) 21st straight win, while the Bears ended their season at 11-13. Branford will face Union County in the championship Thursday night at 7 at Dixie County High.

— Union County 3, Lafayette 1: No. 2 seed Lafayette was upset by No. 3 seed Union County in the other semifinal. The Tigers (16-8) bounced by from losing the first set to take down the Hornets 22-25, 25-20, 29-27, 25-12 behind 19 kills from Jailyn Simmons, and 24 digs and 25 assists from Kamryn Southerland. Brooke Lamb led the Hornets (16-4) with 17 kills, four aces and 18 digs in the loss, while Libby Beach had 21 assists and 15 digs, Havyn Richardson had 21 digs, and Ella McAdams had 18 digs.

BOYS GOLF

— Lafayette 170, Trenton 191, Newberry 197: Gavin Barnes shot a 40 and Harrison Jackson carded a 41 to lead the Hornets to victory over the Tigers and Panthers at Turkey Creek Golf & Country Club. Cooper Kerby added a 43 and Will Sirola capped off the scoring for LHS with a 45.

BOYS SWIMMING

— Baker County 108, Columbia 58: The 200 freestyle relay team of Anderson Mitchell, Frederick Donaway, Zane Bosserman and Baron Herget provided the lone victory for the Tigers, winning with a time of 2:07.35, but the Wildcats won the dual meet.

GIRLS SWIMMING

— Columbia 138, Baker County 88: The Tigers topped the Wildcats in a dual meet behind individual victories from Casey Fair in the 200 IM (2:27.87) and 100 butterfly (1:08.88), Izzy Scott in the 50 freestyle (28.90) and 100 freestyle (1:09.44), and Brie Fair in the 100 backstroke (1:15.79) and 100 breaststroke (1:21.25). The Fair sisters and Scott also swam with Luciana Tonetti on the winning 200 medley relay team (2:12.69), and the Fair sisters and Scott also swam with Blythe Harrell on the winning 200 freestyle relay team (1:57.31).
