PREP ROUNDUP: Branford girls top Dixie County for program's first district title

Branford’s girls soccer team made history Monday night.

For the first time ever, the Buccaneers are district champions.

Behind two goals from Delilah Poore and another from Tatiyana Hernandez, No. 3 seed Branford knocked off top-seeded Dixie County 3-1 in the District 2-2A championship at Lafayette High School. It’s the first title in the program’s short history, which began with the 2022-23 season.

Poore scored in the 15th minute while Hernandez added another goal in the 23rd. Then in less than 15 minutes into the second half, Poore found the net a second time to give the Bucs (9-9-5) enough of a cushion to hold off the Bears (8-6-2).

Kayleigh Wardle assisted all three goals for Branford while goalkeeper Samantha Ray also finished with 10 saves in the victory.

The win clinches the program’s first playoff berth as well. The Region 1-2A bracket will be released later this week.
