PREP CROSS COUNTRY: SHS boys win Suwannee Invitational; Fender, Hernandez take individual titles

Columbia runner Audrey Fender won the girls race at the Suwannee Invitational on Saturday, Branford’s Justin Hernandez won the boys race, and Suwannee’s boys took home the team trophy in its own race.

Fender finished in a time of 20:49.60, well ahead of second-place runner Madison Kennedy from Bradford, who finished in 21:43.90 to lead the Tornadoes to the team title. Hernandez crossed the finish line in 17:33.40.

Seven boys placed in the top 19 for Suwannee, which finished with 40 points to beat Bradford (49) for first place. Paul Gunter led the Bulldogs in third (18:23.40), followed by teammates Jesse Cushman in eighth (18:45.00), Gabe Brackin in 10th (19:20.40), Morgan Mobley in 11th (19:28.40), Joel de la Cruz in 12th (19:42.20), Brig Scott in 15th (19:57.00) and Josue Cuevas in 19th (20:51.40).

The CHS girls placed four runners in the top six but didn’t have enough to score as a team to win the meet. In addition to Fender, Kenya Daniels came in fourth (22:22.10), Morgan Golden was fifth (22:58.10) and Kyndall Norris finished sixth (23:21.80).

Suwannee’s girls placed second with 44 points while Bradford won with 28. Maria Ramirez led the SHS girls in seventh with a time of 23:28.00, followed by Nellie Lamb in eighth (23:31.70), Maddie McMillan in 14th (24:39.80), Arrington Lundy in 16th (25:18.70), Armonie Brown in 27th (27:32.00), Julie Romulo in 28th (27:32.00) and Ali McMillan in 30th (27:39.90).

Rhett Feagle led Columbia’s boys in sixth (18:37.10) and Gavin Satterfield also finished in the top-20 with a 16th-place finish (20:00.50). Belmont Academy’s boys were led by Devin Couey in fifth (18:35.00).

Vanessa Todd (21:50.30) took third to lead Belmont Academy’s girls. Branford’s girls finished fourth, led by Kalyn Osgood in 10th (23:59.90).
