MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: FGC edges Johnson in OT after squandering 16-point lead

Antewan Webber tallied 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting with eight rebounds and four assists, while Axel Holmquist made 8 of his 11 shots to score 18 points and Amayoa’ah Phillips added 16 points to lead Florida Gateway College to a 109-102 win over Johnson University in overtime at home Tuesday night.

Oakley Lewis (15 points), Ty’jahn Wright (13 points) and D’Maceo Sheppard (10 points) also finished in double figures for the Timberwolves, who squandered a 16-point lead in the final seven minutes of regulation before outscoring the Suns 18-11 in overtime to win their sixth game in their last seven.

Isaac Broxey made a layup to put FGC (6-3) up 77-61 with 7:01 to go, but Johnson (0-7) answered with a 13-1 run to pull within four. T-wolves managed to hold the lead up until the final seconds, but after Webber made a pair of free throws to push the lead to three with five seconds left, Keith Wilson sunk a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

FCG survived 28 points and eight rebounds from Wilson, who shot 10 of 20 from the field and 6 of 13 from 3. Akeem Burton added 23 points for Johnson on 8-of-11 shooting.

The Suns took their first lead since early in the second half on a layup from Nygel McCracken to start OT, but the T-wolves responded with a 6-0 run to take a 97-93 lead. Wilson hit another 3 to cut the lead down to a point but Lewis made a layup and Holmquist made a layup after hitting a free throw to put FGC back up six.

Wilson and Wright exchanged layups before Joey Green made another to pull Johnson within it 104-100. Webber then hit a pair of free of throws and Wilson missed a 3 on the other end to allow the T-wolves to close the contest out at the foul line.

Both teams shot the ball exceptionally well, with FGC shooting 62% from the field while Johnson finished at 61%.

Next up for the T-wolves is a home matchup against Polk State College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
