Florida Gateway College split its first two series of the season, going 1-1 at South Georgia State College on Friday and then 1-1 against Thomas University JV at home Saturday.

South Georgia State won the first game of Friday’s doubleheader 4-1 thanks to RBIs from Jordan Styles, Ava Gelm and Grace Clements. Gelm also pitched a complete game, one-hitter with five strikeouts, only allowing a solo home run to Karis Smith. Smith suffered the loss in the circle for FGC, allowing all four runs — two earned — on five hits and two walks in two innings.

FGC bounced back big in Friday’s finale though, rolling to an 11-0 run-rule victory in five innings. Brooklyn Kennedy delivered three RBIs in the win, while Mackenzie Peters, Peyton Hatcher, Georgia Turner, Kayla Hooper, Reece Chasteen and Smith each had on RBI. Jayden Nichols allowed nine of those runs — only two earned — in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss for SGSC, while Amanda Whalen and Peters combined to throw a three-hitter for FGC.

The Timberwolves then turned around and beat Thomas 6-1 in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader behind RBIs from Karley Jerrells, Peters, Kennedy and Turner. Smith also bounced back in the circle, allowing one unearned run on four hits and a walk in six innings with one strikeout.

Thomas, though, struck for five runs against Peters in 1 1/3 innings and the two off Allie Messina and two off Whalen to get the series split, getting three RBIs apiece from Kristen Stellar and Kennedy Hardy, two from Maggie Colgan and one from Keely Bryant. Emylee Mountain, meanwhile, threw a complete game to deliver a win for Thomas, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits and five walks with four strikeouts. Turner had two RBIs for FGC in the loss, while Kennedy and Hatcher each had one.
