BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: CHS boys fall to North Marion, CHS girls blow out Leon

Forward Zavian Douglas scored 19 points and guard Marlin Haywood added seven, but Columbia’s boys basketball team saw its 6-game win streak snapped in a 38-35 loss to North Marion in the Jim Haley Classic at Vanguard High School on Saturday.

It was a defensive struggle all afternoon as the Colts (12-4) led just 4-3 after the first quarter and 15-14 at halftime. The teams went to the fourth quarter tied at 27 before the Tigers (11-7) were outscored by three over the final eight minutes.

Lamont Sweeting Jr. led North Marion with 13 points.

Columbia next travels to Buchholz for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday.

CHS GIRLS BLOW OUT LEON

Forward Jolena Gardner scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds while guard Ayesha Broxey added 11 points to lead Columbia to a 53-26 win over Leon at home Saturday afternoon in a District 2-5A contest.

Gardner also blocked three shots and nabbed four steals, and Broxey dished out five assists. Guard Eriel Baker finished in double figures as well with 10 points to go with five assists, and center Dariyan Williams posted double figures on the glass with 10 rebounds while scoring eight points.

The Tigers (7-6) led 19-6 at the end of the first quarter and then 27-14 at halftime before building a 39-19 lead over the Lions (7-10) after three quarters.

Columbia next hosts Class 4A No. 4 Rickards on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
