Voluntary evacuation issued in Lafayette County

MAYO — A voluntary evacuation order has been issued for areas prone to flooding in Lafayette County.

The Lafayette County Board of County Commissioners issued the voluntary evacuation order, which went into effect at 11 a.m. Sunday in advance of Tropical Storm Debby, which is forecast to intensify into a hurricane before making landfall.

The evacuation order is for all residents living in low lying areas and flood prone areas or structures that have previously flooded during heavy rains. Emergency services may not be immediately available during high water or storm events.

All of Lafayette County can expect to experience tropical storm force winds and depending on the exact track of the storm, the possibility of very heavy rain.

The LHS gym, 160 NE Hornet Lane in Mayo, is opening as a general population shelter at 6 p.m.

Lafayette County offices are also closed on Monday.

COLUMBIA COUNTY SCHOOLS CLOSE

Columbia County Schools also announced Sunday morning that it is closing all Columbia County Schools for Monday.
The district plans to resume normal operations on Tuesday with all employees expected to report to work as scheduled.
