Patients uneasy about leaving their home to visit their doctor or specialty clinic at the Lake Shore Regional Medical Center campus in Lake City now have a telemedicine option.

Telehealth is available for patients of Shands Lake Shore Medical Group and Physician Practices. New and existing patients can be seen by doctors via a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Telehealth allows a patient to talk with a provider the same as in the doctor’s office, but the “visit” is done by video chat without leaving the comfort of home.

“Continuity of care is important to us, as is the safety of patients and staff during this time when social distancing and staying at home are critical,” Rhonda Sherrod, CEO of Shands Lake Shore Regional Medical Center, said in a prepared statement. “Telehealth, now more than ever, may be an effective and safe solution for patients in need of seeing a doctor in the comfort of their own home.”

Not all medical evaluations are available through Telehealth, but many doctor visits can be handled through video chat. These may include certain visits for: Minor illnesses such as colds and allergies; minor injuries such as sprains; follow-up care and medication management or chronic disease management

Other specialty care also may qualify for a telehealth video appointment and many insurance plans now cover these types of visits, Shands officials said.

Currently, these telehealth visits are available on the Lake Shore campus for surgical specialists, bariactric and general surgery, primary care and primary care west and obstetrics and gynecology. Existing or new patients interested in the video appointment opportunities should call their clinic to make sure their appointment will qualify for a video chat.
