Schools around North Florida have canceled classes for Wednesday due to the forecast of winter weather.
Both Columbia County Schools and the Suwannee County School District announced Tuesday morning that it would be closing schools and offices on Wednesday.
In the Columbia County announcement, the district is closing all schools and offices at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and staying closed Wednesday “for the safety of our students and staff.”
Suwannee County Superintendent Ronnie Gray, in the SCSD announcement, said transportation played a vital part in the decision to call off school for Wednesday.
“Current forecasts indicate the potential for icy roadways, which would create hazardous driving conditions,” Gray said in the announcement.
As part of both the Columbia and Suwannee announcements, all extracurricular activities have also been canceled during the closure. The Columbia County Schools’ town hall meeting at Five Points Elementary to discuss that school’s closure as part of the reconfiguration of elementary schools in Lake City was moved up to 4 p.m. Tuesday. The town hall meeting at Eastside Elementary, originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been moved to Thursday at 4 p.m. Melrose Park Elementary’s town hall meeting remains at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
The announcement of the closures of the Columbia and Suwannee County schools comes after Florida Gateway College announced Monday evening that it was shutting down its campus Wednesday due to the winter storm.
The Lafayette County School District announced Sunday afternoon that it was closing school for Wednesday. The Hamilton County School District announced Monday morning that it was closing Wednesday.
All the area schools currently plan to be open Thursday.
