Two face attempted murder charges for an October shooting near Melrose Park Elementary School.

Demontre Paul Ward, a 19-year-old from Lake City, and a juvenile were arrested Wednesday on four counts of attempted murder for the Oct. 8, 2022, shooting incident.

According to a Lake City Police Department release, leads during the investigation led to the arrests.

The shooting, which sent two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds, took place across three city blocks along SE Avalon Avenue near SE Made Street. Melrose Park Elementary is located at the corner of SE Putnam Street and SE Ermine Avenue, one block east of Avalon Avenue and a block south of Dade Street.

Officers responded to the area around 6:23 p.m. Oct. 8, 2022, to a report of gunshots.

While en route, officers learned from dispatch that two victims were on the way to HCA Lake City Hospital in a private vehicle. The officers detoured there and met with the male victims, one of which suffered a wound to the shoulder and the other a word to the wrist.

Officers then secured the three-block scene and interview witnesses with evidence processed by LCPD investigators and crime scene technicians from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
