One person was killed in an overnight house fire near downtown Lake City.
The Lake City Fire Department responded to a fire on NW Madison Street, just across Main Boulevard from the city’s Public Safety Building, around 1:52 a.m. Friday.
When units arrived at the residence, Assistant Chief Dwight Boozer said the house was more than half involved.
Boozer said it took officers only about 10 minutes to have the fire knocked down, as they were trying to suppress the fire while also conducting a search for the person inside the residence.
“It took a little while to get back to where the victim was,” Boozer said. “It was fairly quickly but it wasn’t quick enough.”
Another individual at the residence made it out of the fire, Boozer said. That person was transported to the HCA Lake City Hospital, where they were treated and released.
The identity of the victim has been released.
Lake City Fire Chief Josh Wehinger said the fire is being investigated by the state's Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives Investigations.
